EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Description of my issue:

We have Akeeba Backup Pro installed on our Joomla 2.5 site that we are upgrading over the weekend. We just renewed our subscription to Akeeba Backup Pro and Admin Tools.

I do not even see version 3.6.8 of Akeeba Backup on your website any longer. I know it is from October of 2012...

Any help on the upgrade path from Joomla 2.5 with 3.6.8 to Joomla 3.0 with the current version would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Chuck

Chuck,

The Joomla! 2.5 series is no longer supported in the most current versions of Akeeba Backup. The 4.1.2 release was the last version that supported 2.5. You can find that release here.

Your next problem is your PHP version. The 5.3.x release is end of life and unsupported by the PHP project. Bugs and security vulnerabilities are no longer being fixed in that version. The latest version of Akeeba Backup requires PHP version 5.4 or higher. The last version to support your PHP 5.3.28 was version 4.2.4, available here.

I am not familiar with your host but it is common for commercial hosts to have higher versions of PHP available and use an older version for their default. Depending on the host, you may be able to switch your PHP version on the account level or at the site level, usually in the .htaccess file. Your host would be able to give you more information on what is available and how to implement it. I would strongly recommend that you move off of the PHP 5.3 version.

If you need more information about what version goes with what, you can look at the Compatibility page here: https://www.akeebabackup.com/compatibility.html.

Thanks for the quick reply. Will this work as far as you can tell?

1. Update Akeeba Backup Pro on my Joomla 2.5 site to v 4.1.2 and do a full backup.
2. Get my Host to update my PHP to 5.4 or higher.
3. Update Joomla from 2.5 to 3.4.4
4. Update Akeeba Backup Pro to the current version.

Will I have any issues upgrading Joomla from 2.5 to 3.4.4 with Akeeba Backup Pro v 4.1.2 installed?

Thanks,
Chuck

That'll work!

The upgrade problems are a rumor, and uninstalling is a "voodoo fix".

Once upon a time, Nicholas (and others) wrote the FOF framework and donated it to Joomla! It became part of the core code with 3.2. The authors quickly became disillusioned with their inability to quickly correct and update what was now core code. They forked FOF into F0F. So the FOF library is installed on your 2.5 system as an optional library (non-core). It will be part your your 3.4.4 system as a core library and the F0F library will be installed by Akeeba Backup as an optional library when you update Akeeba. If you are looking at the files and say "Oh, look! A duplicate, let's delete it!" you're in for trouble. You need them both.
