Hello,

since backup-version 4.2.3 eXtrac Wizzard does not extract backups completely. It seems to work correctly and finishes without error message, but only extracts a part of the install folder. This folder is not very big (ca. 200 MB), but original backup is more than 8 GB.

All parts of the backup were downloaded correctly. I already tested with different backups. It works with older one (created by 4.2.2), but does not finish with 4.2.4. Kickstart did extract correctly.

Ignore most errors is checked.

Regards
Samson

Samson,

This sounds very similar to a ticket from earlier in the week. The problem there was not the extraction, it was a corrupted file within the backup. We can not reproduce the problem but it is consistent for the client.

The first thing that I want you to do is to install Akeeba Backup on the source site, two times, back to back, without doing anything in between the two installs. Do not uninstall the component, that will cause you to lose all your settings and possibly your stored backup archives. This "install twice" trick usually works around an occasional bug in the Joomla! installer where it forgets to copy some files during an update.

After that, please redo your backup and see if the new backup archive can be extracted.

I missed that last line. You mean the new archives will extract with Kickstart but not with the eXtract Wizard?

Hello Dale,

yes, kickstart does right. Sometimes I create an exact copy of my life-site. There I can do some tests. I did this with the new backup. I was using kickstart. Database and all files were extracted perfectly and no error was shown.

Let me know, if I can do or test anything, that could help you.

Kind Regards
Samson

At this point of time, I restore my test-site with newest backup of live-site. I use kickstart 4.1.1. Everything seems to work great. It will take some more minutes, but extraction of intstallation folder already has finished and the other folders are extracting at the moment.

Local copy of these files will abort while extracting installation folder, without showing any error. It even shows, everything was extracted correctly. It tells lies! ;-)

Process is finished now. All files were extracted correctly. Database was recreated successfully. Everything worked fine by using kickstart (on the server).

It has been a LONG time since the eXtract Wizard was updated. Its age is starting to show. I really expect that when it won't work any more Nicholas will retire it rather than update it. The tool is intended to work on all operating systems and that is a very difficult trick. Recently we have been recommending clients to install WAMP, LAMP, MAMP, XAMPP on local computers and use Kickstart rather than use the eXtract Wizard.

I understand. That's a shame. It was pretty handy to extract files without the need to install WAMP.

When I understand the manuel properly, the zip-format needs a lot of ressources on the server. So I still hope, Nicholas will fix "my" tool.

I will have to try and remember how Delphi (actually: FreePascal Lazarus, an open source implementation of Delphi) works. I promise I will try, I can't promise I will succeed. It's like trying to race in Formula 1 after 5 years of being out of the sport :)
