I have done this countless times, and it has always worked before. We have a live site and a test site. Periodically, we refresh the live site to the test site using Akeeba Backup.

This time it didn't work. No error messages in the restore, but when I tried to access the site (front-end or back-end), the browser didn't go to the site, but gave me a SAVE dialog (to download some php file that is not in my base directory).

Based on error messages in Akeeba, I had recently upgraded PHP to 5.5, but I set it back to 5.4 to see if this was the problem, and it wasn't.

I do local backups on the test site (Akeeba 4.1.2), and I'm able to restore them.

This is actually unrelated to our software and has to do with your .htaccess file. I have already documented it since a long time ago (seven years or so). Look under ".htaccess directives" on that page.

Thanks so much for the pointer - worked like a charm. I have no idea why I was able to do the refresh at other times without regenerating .htaccess, but now it's part of the process.

My educated guess is that at some not so distant point in the past you had to upgrade to a newer version of PHP. This is typically done by adding AddHandler lines to the .htaccess file.
