EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Description of my issue:

maybe a silly question, but would it be possible to show the Backup Now button on the first control panel from joomla you see when logging in?

I couldn't find anything about this. And the reason why: I was setting up stuff for a Manager for a website, and I would really want this person to be able to hit the backup now button.
Now when I set the rights to that button through Akeeba backup permissions, I also have to set rights to Akeeba's control panel. But then Manager will see the whole control panel, get a "you don't have permission to do this" on everything except the backup now button.

So I figured it would be much nicer for the manager to only see the Backup now button, and then preferably right in his joomla control panel.

is this possible?

edit: oops, sorry, this site is still on 2.5.28. So maybe in 3.4 it is already possible? I have to migrate this site, but it was on old php version first, so couldn't migrate just yet. Recently, webhost has upgraded php, so now I could do migration to 3.4.1.

I'm not sure what you're trying to do, but it seems impossible to do by Joomla! ACLs which are beyond our control. What you definitely need to do is:
  • Give the Manager group the access to Akeeba Backup (Admin) and Backup privileges, but not any of the other (Configure, Download). This can be done through Options, Permissions in Akeeba Backup when you visit it as a Super User.
  • Give the quick icon plugin a view access level which allows the Manager to see it.

The quick icon plugin only provides a link to the component itself. The component itself performs the backup. You cannot perform the backup through a plugin, obviously.

Does that help?

Hey, Nicholas,

I totally overlooked the quick icon plugin. I enabled it, and then I see the Backup now icon in my Joomla control panel, but the weird thing is that the plugin disables itself right away.

Is this over after I migrate to 3.4.1?

because it seems this is exactly what I want to achieve for my manager group!

thanks, and happy easter,

Hm, are we talking about the same plugin? I think you're trying to disable the old, obsolete plugin. Go to Extensions, Plugins Manager. From the Type dropdown at the sidebar select "quickicon". Now you can see the Quick Icon - Akeeba Backup Notification plugin. This plugin works perfectly fine on Joomla! 3.4.1.

You can find this icon in the sidebar of the main Joomla! control panel page. It's at the left, towards the bottom of the quick icons panel, under the Maintenance header: https://www.dropbox.com/s/g8zjzjrez3penum/Screenshot%202015-04-03%2015.46.30.png?dl=0

yeah, we are talking about the same plugin.

but... still on J2.5, so yeah, it disables itself.

I do not know if it is J2.5 related or not.

let's migrate to 3.4.1 first now, I can do that now host has upgraded php.

will report bakc if in J3.4.1 problem still remains

thanks!

I see. No, on Joomla! 2.5 you can't use that plugin. I was previously answering your question based on the Joomla! version (3.4.1) you entered when submitting your ticket.
