I've setup a cron job to run the file akeeba-check-failed.php but what does Akeeba Backup do when it detects a failed backup? Does it send me a email?

And does running that file generate any output that I could log to a file or send in a separate email?

Hello Erik,

yes it sends you an email. It simply alerts you that something went wrong, so you can take a deeper look and review the settings.
This is very useful when you have several sites with backups taken automatically, for further details please take a look at the documentation
