Description of my issue:

Dear Akeeba

I'm in the process of migrating my 2.5.28 joomla websites to joomla 3.3

As my first tests did raise errors, I decided to go systematically from ground up and I thought akeeba backup and kickstart could help me a lot while this by allowing me to backup a state before making changes and restoring if something goes wrong.

I switched to a recommended host for doing that (siteground) and, in order to get a feeling of this migration process, I installed an original joomla 2.5.28 installation file with a new domain name.

The idea is to backup a working joomla 2.5.28, add an extension and migrate the result to joomla 3.3. If the migration fails, I know I have to contact the extension author for help. If it is OK, I can proceed to the next extension.

The problem is the following:
I just installed joomla 2.5.28 (barebone), akeeba admin pro and akeeba backup, proceed with a backup (jpa file). Of course this website migrates without problem to joomla 3.3

If then restore the jpa file on the same folder (with the same domain name, not en temp folder name). the joomla 2.5.28 site runs fine, but when I later migrates it to joomla 3.3, I get an the following error

I first made this test on a temp url (http://107.6.183.34/~geothe/domain/). It didn't work also. I later found explained in kickstart that was error prone, so I used real domain name, but without more succes.

500 - Internal Server Error

This is a temporary server error.

Please try to reload the webpage later.

If you are the webmaster of this site please log in to Cpanel and check the Error Logs. You will find the exact reason for this error there.

Common reasons for this error are:

Incorrect file/directory permissions: Above 755.

In order files to be processed by the webserver, their permissions have to be equal or below 755. You can update file permissions with a FTP client or through cPanel's File Manager.

the site itself is not working at all :-(

I tried to flush the cache of my browser, of the host, I made sure the restore (with kickstart-pro.php) is made on the exact same folder as the original one (of course, I delete all before)
Of course, the specifications of Siteground are more than correct for a joomla 3.3 website (I checked them)
I asked them for help, and they returned me to akeeba...

I'm out of idea and I would really appreciate some help.

HALT! You CANNOT use Akeeba Backup to upgrade your site. Akeeba Backup, as we have said in the videos and written in the documentation and the support ticket system, takes and restores FULL SITE BACKUPS which include three things: a. all of your files (including the Joomla! core files) b. all of your data (including the Joomla! core data) and c. an installer, i.e. a script to restore the database and reconfigure your site. This means that you have a FULL image of your site. If your site is Joomla! 2.5 then your restored site will also be Joomla! 2.5. For the same reason we VERY STRONGLY recommend AGAINST restoring a site on top of a site sporting a different Joomla! version family (e.g. Joomla! 2.5 backup on top of Joomla! 3.3 site) because this will BREAK your site.

If you want to transfer some of your core data (no 3PD components' data) from a Joomla! 2.5 to Joomla! 3 installation you need something like SP Upgrade, jUpgrade or redMIGRATOR. All of these are third party components designed to help you upgrade a site from previous Joomla! versions to Joomla! 3.3.

Since what you are doing is not only impossible with Akeeba Backup but also explicitly recommended against I am going to close this ticket. There's no point trying to help you do something I have already told you it cannot be done, right? :)
