I have been using akeeba backup for years. Have installed to a site and performed first backup. Took a while, but completed ok. It created the JPA file but also there are now 9 (J01-J09) files that are 2GB each. I have never seen this before. Does this have to do with a large amount of download files and videos that are on the site?

I am not sure if I need to keep those or delete them. They usually disappear once the JPA is done creating right?

Thanks for your help and advice.

Yes. Akeeba Backup will back up all files on your site unless you explicitly state otherwise. 18Gb backups are not unheard of when you have tons of media.

Wrong. These are parts of the backup archive. In order to restore your site you need ALL of these files (.jpa, .j01, .j02, ...). Exactly as documented.

Pro tip: search your log file for the words large file. It will tell you which are the large files, where they are and how big they are. I can see a 139Mb ZIP in the site's root and a lot of large files in the downloads folder. Perhaps you'd like to exclude them from the backup using the Files and Directories Exclusion feature of Akeeba Backup.
