Hi,

I just ran a backup and all went well :)

However, I wanted to know if I can backup my entire server, not just the /var/www/html folder by changing the 'site root override' to '/'? Basically, I've installed a number of php modules on top of the standard to get some features working and, not being all that technical, I have no doubt that if I ever had the server crash (AWS EC2) and restored the site I'd probably never work out what server settings I had.

So, can I create a backup that I can restore to a new EC2 instance with the site root override, or can I only backup the folders and files in /var/www/html? (or am I already doing this by default?).

Thanks,
Matthew

No, you can't do that. You would end up with a partial backup for several reasons (ranging from permissions to special files such as sockets and devices). Akeeba Backup is not designed to take full server backups and must not be used for that purpose. If you decide to ignore this warning be advised that restoring such a backup will DEFINITELY break your server.

Ok. Thanks for clarifying it. I won't mess with the root override :)

IIRC you can create a snapshot of an EC2 instance at any time through the AWS panel. It stores it in S3 (of course) and you can use it to spin up a new server at any time. I believe all major cloud server providers offer a similar feature for their respective cloud services.
