Hi! I was just wonder if it would be possible to let the Akeeba GeoIP provider plugin show updated versions in the Joomla available updates list and update it from there.

Kind regards,
Jip

Hello Jip,

It can and it does. However, we cannot release a new version of the plugin whenever MaxMind updates its database. This is what you actually need to upgrade quite often (about once every 15 days). Normally you'd do so by downloading the file from MaxMind, extracting it and copying it in a specific directory of your site. The ability to upgrade the third party file with one click through our software is a just courtesy.

Hi Nicolas,

I meant the plugin itself, not the database. We had the plugin installed when it first was added to the akeeba backup features. I believe this was the 1.0.1 version. At least when we installed it. Now the version is 1.0.5. But this does not show up in the update list of Joomla. Or am I missing something?

Kind regards,
Jip

We do use the Joomla! extensions updater, we do install an update site record and its URL (http://cdn.akeebabackup.com/updates/akgeoip.xml) does have the correct data. I suspect this is related to yet another Joomla! bug I have already fixed.

Joomla! will disable update sites (the database record which tells Joomla! where to get update information for an extension) whenever it thinks it can't communicate with them. However the user doesn't know about that and has no way to re-enable the update sites. I have submitted a new feature to Joomla! which allows the management of update sites. This was accepted and included in the code base for Joomla! 3.4, scheduled for release by the end of the month.

Well, all I can say is that by doing support for our own software we get to discover and fix a lot of core Joomla! bugs :D

OK, good to be a part of debugging Joomla! this way ;-) Looking forward to this new feature in the 3.4 release.

Kind regards,
Jip.
