using akeeba pro. and i noticed that, with upload to dropbox is ENabled, akeeba keeps on writing locally.

Backup Failed

The backup operation has been halted because an error was detected.
The last error message was:

Could not open /home/users/xxx/xxx/administrator/components/com_akeeba/backup/site-xxxxx-20140908-184646.jpa for writing. Check permissions and open_basedir restrictions.

Please click the 'Analyse Log' button below have Akeeba Backup analyse its log file for further information.

a log file is not created after this

when i check the path on the server, the full backup seems to be there. Still i need split files and downloaded to dropbox. i have numeral sites, and i even, one by one, copied the settings of a site that is still working, as in does write to dropbox

clueless....

used the wizzard, after which the dropbox connection was gone. re-enabled the dropbox link. again the same error. now there was a log file, claiming all was a success. could not download the file

This most likely indicates that you have run into a maximum file size imposed by your host. I can't really follow what you are saying about split files. If you are using split files, you need to reduce the file size.
