EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Description of my issue:

Cannot upgrade to 3.11.2. When I attempt to upgrade, it creates a restore point, and then dies with a 404 error on this page:

http://www.cal-sailing.org/administrator/index.php?option=com_installer&view=install&task=install.akrealinstall

I have downloaded the 3.11.2 zip file and tried to install it with the standard Extension Manager installer, and I get the same problem.

The packages of our latest versions of our components are rather big. Since the default maximum upload size on most servers is just 2Mb this may cause an upload error. The best solution is to ask your host to set the following in the server's php.ini:
upload_max_filesize = 10M
post_max_size = 10M

If this is not possible, there's a good chance that the following lines in your .htaccess file may work on most servers:
php_value upload_max_filesize 10M
php_value post_max_size 10M

There is also another alternative, but it won't work on all hosts: installation by URL. Please go to the Download section of our site and select the software and version you want to download. Next to the "Download now" button you will see a link called "DirectLink". Right click on it and select "Copy link address" (the exact phrase depends on the browser, but it should have to do about copying the link or its address / URL / location).

Now go to your site's back-end, Extensions, Extensions Manager and find the Install from URL field. Note: on Joomla! 3.x you have to click on the "Install from URL" tab to see that field. Replace the contents of the "Install URL" field with the contents of your clipboard (the DirectLink URL you copied above) and click on the "Install" button next to this textbox. As long as your server supports installing extensions from URL the installation should go through.

If this still doesn't help you can always follow the manual installation instructions in our troubleshooting documentation.

I tried everything, including manual install, and I keep getting the same error.

It creates the system restore point, and then hangs (see first screenshot). After that, the admin site is broken (see second screenshot)

  1. Please disable the System - System Restore Point plugin and try the install again. I don't think that will fix it, but that is an easy thing to eliminate. What we're doing is turning off the System Restore Point.
  2. Please double check that your Download ID is correct. The Download IDs all changed again in March with the update to 3.3.

I think the real problem is that your f0f layer is messed up and we're going to have to manually upload it. I'll double check that error with Nicholas to make sure.

Nicholas confirmed the f0f error problem. We need to manually install the f0f layer. Note that there are two of them. The fof (alpha O) layer is part of the Joomla! core programs, we don't want to mess with that. The f0f (zero) layer is the one we need to repair.
  1. Delete the folder /libraries/f0f via FTP or with your host's file manager
  2. Extract the Akeeba Backup 3.11.2 archive locally
  3. Upload the f0f folder to the /libraries folder on your site.
That should allow you to perform the upgrade on your site.

This more or less worked, thanks. We are now on 3.11.2.

The problems:

1. When I expanded the zip, there was an fof directory but not an f0f one. I assumed this was a typo, renamed fof to f0f, and uploaded per your instructions.
2. Uploading and installing the zip file through Extension Manager did not work. It got the 404 error at the same place, but (unlike earlier) the admin site wasn't broken. So uploading the f0f library did some good.
3. Doing a manual update worked.
4. Akeeba Backup is still telling me that an updated version (3.11.2) is available, but at the same time telling me that the current version is 3.11.2 (2014-06-12). No problem for me.

Thanks again.

I'm glad you got it working!

There is now a Reload Update Information button on the Akeeba products main screen that will allow you to force the Joomla! Extension Manager cache to refresh. That will eliminate the update notice.
