EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Description of my issue:
When I try to update from within the Akeeba backup and Admin Tools it fails, and have failed fo several versions.
My tmp folder is writable, and I can update via Joomlas own installation (which I'm forced to use at the moment).
If I use the internal I just get
Downloading the update package failed. Make sure that your temp-directory is writable or that you have enabled Joomla!'s FTP options in your site's Global Configuration.

Best regards Kenneth

The packages of our latest versions of our components are rather big. Since the default maximum upload size on most servers is just 2Mb this may cause an upload error. The best solution is to ask your host to set the following in the server's php.ini:
upload_max_filesize = 10M
post_max_size = 10M

If this is not possible, there's a good chance that the following lines in your .htaccess file may work on most servers:
php_value upload_max_filesize 10M
php_value post_max_size 10M

There is also another alternative, but it won't work on all hosts: installation by URL. Please go to the Download section of our site and select the software and version you want to download. Next to the "Download now" button you will see a link called "DirectLink". Right click on it and select "Copy link address" (the exact phrase depends on the browser, but it should have to do about copying the link or its address / URL / location).

Now go to your site's back-end, Extensions, Extensions Manager and find the Install from URL field. Note: on Joomla! 3.x you have to click on the "Install from URL" tab to see that field. Replace the contents of the "Install URL" field with the contents of your clipboard (the DirectLink URL you copied above) and click on the "Install" button next to this textbox. As long as your server supports installing extensions from URL the installation should go through.

If this still doesn't help you can always follow the manual installation instructions in our troubleshooting documentation.

I shouldn't have a problem with upload sizes, ie. I can upload other large components. So as long a Akeeba uses the php.ini I've placed in the administrator folder, it's set for 50MB.

Best regards Kenneth

Some hosts block those local php.ini files. As long as PHP is actually using it, the installer should be happy, we haven't hit 50 mb yet. :-)

Have you updated your Download ID? All of them changed with our site update on December 25. You need to enter the new Download ID and then refresh the link on the update screen. You are not getting the right error message for this problem, but we have seen quite a bit of it this year.

The only other thing I can think of is the FTP layer in Joomla! That is what the error message suggests, but if the Extension Manager doesn't need it, Live Update shouldn't either.

I see, I'm using 'add-on' download ID for the site, allthough it's the 'master' site. I've updated them now (they were different), and then I'll have to see what happens on the next update.
I think we should close the ticket. And if the problem reappears, I'l open a new one. Thankyou!

Best regards Kenneth

The Add-on IDs should not have changed, only the main one, which is based on the hash of your site password. With 3.2, the hash changed, so the main Download ID changed. We'll see what the next update brings, if you have any trouble, just let us know.
