Hi Guys,

I am using the Watchful.li service to trigger remotely backups and all seems to be working well - this is a great combination and I can see it being very popular.

My question concerns multi part backups - within the backup profiles I have an "Amazon S3" profile which utilises my S3 account as a repository for my backups. Within the set up for this profile I have:
  • Under the data processing engine>Upload to Amazon S3>Configure>Disabled Miltipart Uploads
--> I was sure I read somewhere that this was a preferred option for S3?

So I was surpirsed to see both .jpa and .j01 files in the archive.
I also have configured:
  • Under the Archiver Engine>JPA Format>Configure>Part Size for Split>49.99
--> again following advice on Akeeba (I think!)?

The part sizes in S3 I see reflect that setting with .JPA being 42.5MB and .J01 being 50MB making a total backup size of 92.5 MB - confirmed as correct within the Akeeba Manage Backups.

So my two questions are:
  1. Am I correct in disabling the Multipart option for S3, did I pick that up from Akeeba support pages or am I dreaming?!
  2. If I have disabled multi part archive how come I have got one? (this seems to only be the case where the backup exceeds 50Mb - out of 22 sites involved this only applies where this is true)

Disabling multipart uploads is a recommended setting, but it doesn't do what you think it does. It merely tells Akeeba Backup to send an entire file to S3 at once. This is less likely to cause S3 to throw an error when uploading, but requires more time. Which is why it is recommended to be used with small part file sizes.

This doesn't tell Akeeba Backup to create a single part archive. If you want to create a single part archive you need to set the part size for split archives to 0. But this will cause a 92.5 Mb to be created which requires twice the time to upload to Amazon S3. That might cause PHP to throw a timeout error and your backup will fail.

The exact mechanics of how part sizes affect upload time and their relation to timeout errors are discussed in the documentation.
