Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I read the related troubleshooter articles above before posting (which pages?)? none of them seemed to apply
Have I searched the tickets before posting? Yes, no results fround
Have I read the documentation before posting (which pages?)? I watched the video but it didn't address my issue.
Joomla! version:2.5.9
PHP version: (unknown)
MySQL version: (unknown)
Host: rochenhost.com
Akeeba Backup version:Most recent..just got it yesterday

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Description of my issue:

I want to move my site using an Akeeba generated backup and kickstart. The thing that makes this a little different is I want to restore it in a subdirectory so my current site doesn't get affected until I am ready to move it out of the subdirectory and make it a live site.

Do I simply just create the subdirectory, move the backup and kickstart php file into the subdirectory and follow the instructions as I saw in the video? I just want to make sure that it won't effect any of the files that are not in the subdirectory or at the public_html level.

Thanks!
Kim

Hi Kim,

yes, simply create a new folder, then run Kickstart in that folder to extract the archive.
The installation scripti will do the rest :)

Hello Kim,

As Davide said, that's what you can do. However, there is a catch! I'd recommend against using a subdirectory. Even though your site will be restored you will not be able to use it due to .htaccess options conflicts between the main site and the site in the subdirectory. Even if you work past them you will still be shooting yourself in the feet. All image articles will disappear and all new images you put into your articles will include the subdirectory name. Same goes with links between articles or from articles to menu items and so on (unless you're using JCE's AdvLink plugin, but that's another story). Trying to move the modified site back to the site's root will result in the same issues happening. These are limitations of how web sites work, not something in Joomla! or Akeeba Backup.

So: you do not really want to restore your site in a subdirectory.

What you want to do –and should do– is restore your site in a subdomain.

Go to your server's control panel and create a new subdomain. Make sure that its root is not inside the main site's directory, otherwise you'll have the .htaccess problems I mentioned above. Use a root directory one level above your main site's root directory. For example, if your main site is inside a folder called public_html do not put the subdomain's files inside a directory of public_html. Instead, create a new directory (let's say dev_html) located next to the public_html directory, as in
\ FTP root (you are here when connecting by FTP)
+-- dev_html Subdomain's root
+-- public_html Main site's root
+-- some_other_folders Any other directories you see in FTP

From that point you can follow the instructions in the video tutorial, remembering that you will be uploading your backup archive and kickstart.php in dev_html, not public_html.

Also note that you will need to create a new database for the site restored in the subdomain.
