The backup is a read only operation which does not modify your site in any way. The entire point of a backup is to save the state of a site. The only way a backup can lead to your site not loading is you running out of disk space. Try removing incomplete and older backups from your backup output directory (default: administrator/components/com_akeeba/backup).

Dear Nicholas,

You're a star! deleted some old backups and we're back.
