Description of my issue:
I have a rather large magazine style site, where I use Akeeba professional to backup.
This had been done automatically through the cron job.
-- cli/akeeba-backup.php

Up until about a month ago, it worked fine, then the automatic back up started to fail.
The backup completes normally if i execute from the admin area of the site.

The site backup has become large at 1.2gb Im sure this has something to do with it.
My host says php excution time is limited to 30 seconds.

My question "is there a way to do automated backup with a site this large"

The easiest way in your particular case* is to use the webcron.org automation method which is described both in the component's Scheduling Information page and the documentation. If that doesn't work you have to ask your host to lift the execution time limit from CRON jobs on your site. If they won't do it, just go to a decent host like SiteGround, Rochen, CloudAccess.net or iRedHost. These hosts are known to allow you to run long CRON jobs for your backups if you ask them. Frankly, it's dead easy for a host that knows what they are doing to lift those limits and let you back up your site automatically.

* Let me explain why I say this applies to your case. You are taking a backup from the back-end of your site without a problem. This means that any web-based method of taking a backup will work with your site. The webcron.org method uses the front-end backup method which is pretty much the same as the back-end manual backup, with the only difference that it's designed to be executed by CRON jobs, not humans.
