Description of my issue:

I am trying to backup a 1.5.26 site with JMS multisites installed on it.  I cannot change the permissions of the root directory to 0755 due to the symlinks.  I get this type of error: http://screencast.com/t/QKjLGU05k4

Unreadable file /var/www/html/multisites/146empoweru/libraries. Check permissions Unreadable file /var/www/html/multisites/146empoweru/plugins. Check permissions Unreadable file /var/www/html/multisites/146empoweru/media. Check permissions   However, with these errors, the backup does complete.  It's one JPA and 11 additional supportive zips.  I downloaded it with binary code, all 22gb, via SFTP in WinSCP.   I want to back up the site so I can install it locally and migrate it to Joomla 2.5.9.   I tried installing this downloaded backup locally via kickstart.php, but during the unpacking/extraction it says it has an error reading a particular file and asks if I want to start over.  I tried changing the permissions in my local folders to access/read/write full permissions and even with the change the error still occurs.   What am I to do?   Thanks,   Dawn

Regarding the unreadable files / folders, you have to fix their permissions.

Regarding restoring a multi-site on a Windows machine, forget it. JMS Multisites uses symlinks (symbolic links) between directories to achieve its multisite features. Symlink support was added in Windows 7, only if you reformat your hard disk with the new version of NTFS+ and only if you run PHP as an Administrator. Believe me, this is A HELL OF A LOT harder than it sounds (it took me half a day to get my setup right to be able to create symlinks on Windows). Just don't try this, it won't work.
