Description of my issue:

Is there a way to upgrade/update joomla (but not manually) without AdminTools ? e.g. disable it.

Hello David,

In order to disable Admin Tools update notifications and its updater do the following:

  • Unpublish the "Quick Icon - Admin Tools Joomla! Update Check" plugin
  • Unpublish the "System - Joomla! Update Email" plugin
  • Publish the "Quick Icon - Joomla! Update Notification" plugin

All updates will now happen through Joomla!'s built-in Joomla! Update (com_joomlaupdate) component...

...which is the same as Admin Tools. A few months ago I was approached by the core maintainers. They had a problem. The Joomla! Update (as was first introduced in Joomla! 1.6) was just fine in theory, but didn't work in practice on many servers, mainly shared hosts. At the same time Admin Tools' Joomla! update worked just fine on all of them. So they asked me if I could donate my code. Which I did. So, the core Joomla! Update component (com_joomlaupdate) is a "light" version of Admin Tools' Joomla! Update feature. There are a few differences: it uses a more primitive download system, it relies on a published XML feed to detect updates instead of seeing the update files and it uses Javascript based on mooTools instead of jQuery. But the main operation (extracting the update and installing it) is the same as Admin Tools.

So no matter what you do, you will be using Admin Tools to install Joomla! updates. Its method, its code, is the current Joomla! standard.
