It looks like the remote FTP server misunderstands the site transfer (which closes and reopens the FTP connection between backup step breaks which are necessary to avoid PHP timeouts) as a denial of service attack and refuses to open a connection. Simply put, this means that you can't use the Site Transfer Wizard against that server. But you can use a regular backup and one of the following workarounds:

  • Take a regular backup, download it, upload it to the new server. Use Kickstart to restore the site on the new server.
  • Take a regular backup using a Part Size for Split Archives around 5-10Mb and using the Data Processing option "Upload to Remote FTP". Use Kickstart to restore the site on the new server.
  • Take a regular backup, uploading it to Amazon S3. Upload Kickstart Professional on the new site. Use it to import the backup from S3 and restore it on the new server.

Remember that Akeeba Backup Installer (the restoration script included in every backup) doesn't care if you are restoring to the same or a different server.

Thanks - I ended up ftpp'ing the backup archive to the new client server and used kickstart.

Gotta say I really love Akeeba.  Great work
