I restored my site on a new host, I haven't transfered my domain to the new host yet (want to test it out before I do a real migration).

I am having difficulty with my .htaccess.

I had rewriting turned on when I created the image.

However when I have it restored, I can only run it with re-write turned off.

I tried copying htaccess.txt to .htaccess before re-enabling it, but when I try to use the shorted URLs I just get 404 errors.

Any advice?

As I've written in the documentation, you can't use SEF URLs without having a proper domain name. This is an Apache limitation. The temporary URLs in the form www.example.com/~user and SEF URLs don't mix.
