I had something occur today that I have never experienced before but I guess must somehow be attributed to Akeeba backup.  I clicked a link in my email telling me an update to Akeeba backup was available.  I told the system to go ahead and install it then I left and went to work.  Tonight when I got home I realized my site was acting very strange (I had not checked it since starting the update).

The template was messed up, certain modules were not working, and the site was running incredibly slow even though it is always super fast and on a virtual dedicated server.  I thought something had gone wrong and went in to the backend to do a restore to the last good time I had seen the site.

When I went into Akeeba I was presented with the screen you get after an upgrade.  The one where you check the boxes, agree, etc.  After I approved it and got through that I went back and checked the front end and suddenly everything was working correctly again.

I have no idea what happened, or if this is just a bug unique to my install.  I have attached the restore point backup log in case it would be of use to you.  Please let me know if you have any questions or require further information.

Mandatory information about my setup:

Joomla! version: 2.5.7
PHP version: 5.3.16
MySQL version: 5.1.66-cli
Host: wswd.net
Akeeba Backup version:3.6.12

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

The only two things in Akeeba Backup which may run in the front-end of your site are:

  1. a scheduled front-end backup
  2. the update email plugin

The latter runs irrespectively of you logging back in the back-end and going through the post-installation page. Moreover, it only runs about once every day so this can't be the cause of your issue.

Which leaves us with the scheduled front-end backup. If you were taking a backup when you upgraded your copy of Akeeba Backup, the backup can enter a loop and get "stuck". Visiting Akeeba Backup's Control Panel page kills all running backups. That would explain why your site appeared sluggish (the backup is a resource intensive process) and why going through the post-installation page fixed the issue (you entered the Control Panel page which kills the rogue backup).
