Hm, I thought I replied this question earlier today.
Using the Joomla! extensions updater is out of the question because of some deficiencies:
- it doesn't allow us to specify a per-subscriber unique parameter in the download URL which is used to authenticate the user and make sure that only paying subscribers with current subscriptions can download our software
- it doesn't work on systems which do not have url_fopen_wrappers enabled
- it doesn't understand the difference between alpha, beta, rc and stable releases, ending up proposing unstable releases on production sites
- it doesn't work well on shared servers (white screen of death)
All of these have been dealt with in our own Akeeba Live Update, integrated with all of our software. Furthermore, Live Update supports sending you an email whenever a new version is available. The email comes with a one-time update URL which, when clicked, will automatically log you in to your site and run the update.
Therefore using Live Update we give you more functionality and less issues. Why would you want to go back to the stone age?
