PHP version: 5.3.3
MySQL version: 5.1.66
Host: CentOS 6.3
Akeeba Backup version: 3.6.10

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Description of my issue:

We've been changing the output directory but it continues to default when using CIFS Share.  It works fine with the normal folder outside of the web root directory.  Why the default?  The network share is set to 777 for the time being.

It's possible that your PHP settings don't allow writing to directories outside your account's directory. Perhaps you can try a symlink to the folder located in the account's root?
