GoDaddy informs me that we have to learn SSH in order to delete any files on the unmanaged FTP backup we pay for. We have a VPS through GoDaddy. It appears we just need to learn another coding language, but can Akeeba Backup delete files it has created in/sent to the FTP account?

Thanks for the help!

Chris

Hello Chris,

Um, that sounds like a typical bullshit reply from one of GoDaddy's underpaid, unknowledgable first level techs. Since Akeeba Backup uses FTP to connect there and upload the backup archives there is nothing stopping you from connecting via FTP (e.g. using FileZilla) and do whatever you please to the files.

FWIW, SSH is not a programming language. SSH is a method to connect to a remote server and pretty much gain access to its command line environment. Unless you want to manage server settings there is really no need to do that. Whoever told you you need that is beyond stupid: he's dangerous!

I have one suggestion: move away from GoDaddy. I believe I don't have to explain anything more about that, right?

That would be WAY too easy, but you cannot FTP in. You can only access the FTP backup from our servers. So, your FTP client or site or FTP client has to be on GoDaddy servers to access it. Maybe there is a Joomla FTP extension or something. :(

Also, if you have any suggestions to a good VPS server host, let me know.

I agree though. Super lame :(

Hello Chris,

Ugh, that sucks! Why would anyone sign up for such a service? In this case the only thing you can easily do is using Akeeba Backup's quota management features (make sure you check the "Enable remote quotas" checkbox in the Configuration page) or use the "Manage remote files" in the Administer Backup Files page.

The service has been decent cost effective so far, just there's always a push for their "managed" service which cost a CRAZY amount. Don't assume I'm an idiot ;)

Anyway, when I delete files inside of Akeeba Backup, I'd think it would delete them on the Remote FTP Backup server. GoDaddy said to research an FTP client inside of cPanel or Joomla. They said the client just has to be on our server, not our OC or browser.

I noticed when I retreived one of the remote files in AkeebaBackup, it said something like "unable to delete" file after it downloaded it to our local server. I was trying to look for an error log or the reason it gave for being unable to delete the file, but coul not find one.

Any help with any of these would be great!

When you delete a backup archive record or a backup archive file from your local server te remote file is not automatically deleted. This is a safety feature. If you accidentally delete a record we want you to have... a backup :) This is why you have to use the "Manage remote files" feature in the Administer Backup Files page.
