Description of my issue:

Quick question Nicholas!

I often backup our site manually which means I seem to end up with lots of old backups getting backed up!

Unless I remember to delete the old one's first!

I nearly downloaded a 2gb file by mistake because of it

is there a way to tell a new backup to override old one's or even to delete old one's before backing up

I guess I can exclude the backup-directory in backups as an alternative and then delete manually as I do now

Perhaps an option to delete backups before backing up might be available in future updates?

best to you

Akeeba Backup normally excludes its current backup output directory from the backup. There are a few cases where this is not possible or adequate:

  • on some systems resolving paths is problematic due to server setup and the automatic exclusion fails
  • you've changed your backup output directory and Akeeba Backup is trying to backup the files in the old backup output directory (which is no longer excluded)
  • you have multiple backup profiles with different output directories; Akeeba Backup will only exclude the current profile's output directory

In any case, excluding the folder is the best approach.

You should never, ever, EVER delete your backups unless you have a complete backup. The idea is that if your current backup fails you end up with no backup. One unfortunate twist of fate later and you're screwed. It's the equivalent of getting rid of your backup parachute before you try opening your main parachute. Way too dangerous!
