Mandatory information about my setup:

Joomla! version: 1.7.2
PHP version: 5.2.17
MySQL version: 5.0.91
Host: Strato
Akeeba Backup version: 3.3.6

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it. DONE.

Description of my issue:
During backup I got the error 500 message.
The backup of "database only" works.
A month ago everthing was still working fine.

Also the update or newly installation to a new version ends in an error.
Only the installation to the actual version is functioning.

I tried already to increase the filesize and incrased / decreased the min / max time and also to 50%.

The only difference was that I got the error 500 at different stages during the backup.

Please help, I need to upgrade to Joomla 2.5 als well as to Kunena 2.0. But without backup ....

Rolf

Please do the following, in the order presented here (please don't take any shortcuts):

1. The first thing you must do is to use the Configuration Wizard button in the Control Panel page.

2. Check your free space. If you don't have enough free space, your host will kill the script in mid-process, making Akeeba Backup's interface throw this error. As a rule of thumb, we propose having about 40-50% of your account's allocated quota free.

Some hosts claim to give you "unlimited" space, or an absurd amount like 100Gb. According to our experience, they mostly lie. On many occasions the host only gave 100Mb or 1Gb of space. If unsure, please ask your host about the real free space you have in your account.

3. In the Configuration page, find the Archiver Engine row, click on Configure, set the Part size for split archives to 10Mb. If this doesn't work also try 5Mb and 2Mb.

4. Try the following settings:
- Minimum execution time: 1 second
- Maximum execution time: 7 seconds
- Runtime bias: 50%

5. Try the following settings:
- Minimum execution time: 5 second
- Maximum execution time: 3 seconds (yes max is lower than min, it's not a typo)
- Runtime bias: 50%

If all else fails please indicate which of those steps you have followed as well as ZIP and attach your new log file.

Awesome! Another way to achieve the same result should be using the Configuration Wizard, which is step #1 in our troubleshooting instructions. There's a catch, though. It will only try part sizes up to 10Mb. If the test file grows over 10Mb it will assume that there should be no limit set. On some hosts you may have to set the part size for split archives to some odd values like 20Mb, 50Mb or 100Mb. These cases are not caught by the Configuration Wizard and require manual intervention. You may want to try increasing the part size until you find your server's maximum limit. The higher the limit, the less part files are created. The less part files created the easier they are managed.
