Description of my issue:

Hi! I want to setup a development environment for a clients website. I was thinking about putting this in a subdirectory (/development) of the Joomla installation. Can I use the Site Transfer Wizard for this? Anything I should be mindful off?

Is it possible to make this a two-way street? So first I copt the live site to the development directory, then after changes in the development I want to 'resync'.

Is it best to use two databases for this?

Any suggestions are welcome ;-) Thanks!

With regards,

Yes, you can use the Site Transfer Wizard for this. Things to watch out:
- If you are using the .htaccess Maker of Admin Tools you will have to set the subdirectory as a directory where direct access to all files (including .php) is allowed on the main site. Otherwise you will not be able to access the site in the subdirectory at all.
- Likewise, after restoration, you will have to remove the .htaccess file from the subdirectory, reconfigure the .htaccess Maker (domain name, base directory) and create a new .htaccess file.
- Any other extension storing absolute URLs or file paths will have to be updated

Going from the dev to the live site isn't easy. You may want to read our Advanced Site Transfers walkthrough. Bear in mind that if you have category, article and/or component changes in both sites then you can no longer merge them, as this would cause the #__assets table to break with unpredictable results.

OK, thanks. I will give it a try. Maybe I'll just use it on-way. First create a copy in the development, do some testing an when it works just do the same on the live site. And then just do this again the next time something needs to be changed.

Thanks for your quick and helpfull response.
