Description of my issue:

Sorry to bother you with this, but I'm not a developer, just learning to use Joomla!.

I can easily move to PHP 5.3 via my CPanel, but wondered about issues with all the extensions. Will this upgrade from 5.2 be transparent?

I know you can't guarantee this, but wondered in your experience will it be a non-event.

Of course, I'll make a back up first...

Thank you,
Jim

I can not reply with absolute certainty. It depends on the extensions installed on your site, i.e. components, plugins, modules and templates. If any one of them is not compatible with PHP 5.3 you will have unexpected behaviour. Joomla! itself is fully compatible with PHP 5.3 since version 1.5.15. All of my software published within the last year is certainly compatible with PHP 5.3 (with the latest versions being developed on PHP 5.3). Most third party extensions are also compatible with PHP 5.3. Maybe the easiest way to check is backing up your site and restoring it to a local server which uses PHP 5.3. In that respect please beware, for newer versions of many pre-packaged server environments actually use PHP 5.4 nowadays.
