I just upgraded to v3.6.3 and I notice that the size of my backup file has jumped from 80mb to more than 180mb. Has there been a change in the compression or something? This is on my dev server too where my database has minimal records.

Nope, no change like that. The most likely explanation is that you have another site in a subdirectory of the main site and you're backing it up along its backups. Or that you changed your backup output directory and you're now backing up an old backup. Actually, if you can ZIP and attach the backup log file I will have a much better idea.
