Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I read the related troubleshooter articles above before posting (which pages?)? yes

Have I read the documentation before posting (which pages?)? No
Joomla! version: 2.5.6
PHP version: 5.2.17
MySQL version: 5.0.95
Host: 1+1
Akeeba Backup version: 3.6.2

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Description of my issue:

I have the same issue with the yellow window since the last update. I've spoken with my host, which is 1and1.com (one of the world largest) about the php-version issue. There is no specific timeframe availbe until they are switching off 5.2. They are still testing newer versions but that will take some time. And I as a small customer have no influence to change that.
1and1 told me the only way for a current change to another newer php-version would be to set up a htacces especially for Akeeba to parse php6 (which is in Dev-mode on their servers). I have build a htaccess with "AddType x-mapp-php6 .php AddHandler x-mapp-php6 .php", put it into the folder "media/com_akeeba", but I still get the yellow error window. All folder permissons are already set as necessary.

Any solution?

Thxs.

My advice: move to a decent host. 1and1 is giving you nonsense excuses.

Now let me back this up (no pun intended) with arguments. PHP6 was cancelled some 3 years ago. Instead, PHP 5.3 was created out of the ashes of that old project and PHP 5.4 is the natural progression. Right now, PHP 5.3 is a mature project and PHP 5.4 is a stable project. So, how come 1and1 propose to use PHP6, a product never officially released as an alternative?

It's simple, really. They have created their servers about three to four years ago. The only PHP versions back then were 5.1 (which was just end of life), 5.2 (which was stable) and 6 (which was under development). It seems that 1and1 will simply not update their servers through all those years. Instead of investing a minimal amount of time to install PHP 5.3 on their servers and allow you to access it through .htaccess they decided to stick with the OBSOLETE, ANCIENT versions of PHP they had put on their servers when they built them. In typical 1and1 fashion they gave you a nonsense reply of using this OBSOLETE, ANCIENT AND CANCELLED version of PHP instead. They don't care about you and your security. They only care about profit, even if it's at the peril of your site.

Therefore my advice is to vote with your wallet. If they treat you like crap just take your business to a decent host. For example, a decent, up to date and low-cost host is SiteGround. There many other decent hosts out there like Rochen, CloudAccess.net, iRedHost and so on. There is no reason sticking with a company which doesn't care updating their servers and gives you extremely stupid and dangerous advice when you ask them for support.

Thanks for explaining. I cannot complain about 1+1 over the past 10-12y. They have 5.4 in dev-mode, but they do not recommend it for now to use it until all their tests on their many environments are done. They said to me that within the next months 5.4 or later will official released on their machines. I'm just the end user and would like to have my projects running. I understand you right that the issue with the "yellow window" cannot be solved other than having a newer php-version (which I cannot obtain for now)?

Yes, the yellow window cannot be removed. I had two options for letting users know that PHP 5.2 support is going to be discontinued soon: 1. mention it in the release announcement or 2. the yellow box. Past experience with dropping Joomla! 1.6, 1.7 and 1.5 support has showed me that nobody reads the release announcements and everyone complains that I didn't give advance notice. So I decided to go with the second option. I am going to improve the styling of the box to make it a standard warning box which doesn't stick out as bad as it does now.

I've checked the permissions as required in the yellow window. All are already set properly. Before the 3.6.2 update I hadn't have any problem. What do you suggest to get functional backups? Going backwards to Akeeba 3.6.1?

Instead of going back you can install the latest dev release which includes the fix for this issue. Or you can wait a few more days for me to release a new version.

FYI: I've updated and put the modified htaccess into the root and let the server parse "AddType x-mapp-php6 .php AddHandler x-mapp-php6 .php"

In my configuration window I see now that PHP 5.4.5 is running. According to 1+1 it is in Dev-mode and I will check now my whole site if other applications running well. At least the yellow warning window has dissappeared.

I ment another project on Joomla 1.5.6 where I see that now php 5.4.5 is running. Have to check the 2.5.6 Joomla installation if it is running properly. Disregard the last sentence in my previous post.

I assume you mean Joomla! 1.5.26, not 1.5.6. Joomla! 1.5.6 won't run at all with PHP 5.4 :) You may also want to read my reply on another, similar ticket.

While the J 1.5.26 project is running now on 5.4.5 I cannot approach the other project on J 2.5.6. All what I get is a 500 error as soon as I try load the backend entry form. As soon as I delete the htaccess with the "AddType x-mapp-php6 .php AddHandler x-mapp-php6 .php" - command I can step into the J 2.5.6 admin section.

Are both sites running on the same server? Please note that using the same hosting company doesn't say much. Usually hosting companies have many servers with different setups. A .htaccess directive used on one server may not work on another. If unsure, please contact your host and ask them if the AddType and AddHandler directives are supposed to work on the specific server hosting this particular site.

Issue solved:

The site is now running with 5.4.5dev while 1+1 standard php is still 5.2.17. With help of 1+1 support there was a quick setting in my global php-config necessary and a fix in my php.ini

That's good to know! At least I can tell other people using 1and1 to pursue a similar resolution to the PHP upgrade problems.
