After all the experimentation with different scripts, I'm seein some strange activity on the guest counter.
I have more than 1000 guests at all time.

I have no idea what kind of contents the session table should have, but looking in one I see this inthe data field:
__default|a:6:{s:15:"session.counter";i:1;s:19:"session.timer.start";i:1345093321;s:18:"session.timer.last";i:1345093321;s:17:"session.timer.now";i:1345093321;s:8:"registry";O:9:"JRegistry":1:{s:7:"*data";O:8:"stdClass":1:{s:12:"mobilejoomla";O:8:"stdClass":2:{s:5:"cache";s:220:"ZY9dDoJADITv0gsIxB/sPvquRzCVrbCBVbKtfyF7d1mFxMSnpt+knRnCHAfBNYLlu6sYDGE5EU+hvfVgBDOENPIcITB1x1k5YTZhqQLz5eGsNmDcFxczbtjVjf5y56nm8zV4UgGzH2k5+jnP+uo5WW0RlJ+6aNR3aV8h9BTIp3wZDlFwiUDeWjCHdCtqdx2JABYp/SjOnzapmrR6/TT5rxVjfAM=";s:6:"markup";s:0:"";}}}s:4:"user";O:5:"JUser":25:{s:9:"*isRoot";N;s:2:"id";i:0;s:4:"name";N;s:8:"username";N;s:5:"email";N;s:8:"password";N;s:14:"password_clear";s:0:"";s:8:"usertype";N;s:5:"block";N;s:9:"sendEmail";i:0;s:12:"registerDate";N;s:13:"lastvisitDate";N;s:10:"activation";N;s:6:"params";N;s:6:"groups";a:0:{}s:5:"guest";i:1;s:13:"lastResetTime";N;s:10:"resetCount";N;s:10:"*_params";O:9:"JRegistry":1:{s:7:"*data";O:8:"stdClass":0:{}}s:14:"*_authGroups";N;s:14:"*_authLevels";a:2:{i:0;i:1;i:1;i:1;}s:15:"*_authActions";N;s:12:"*_errorMsg";N;s:10:"*_errors";a:0:{}s:3:"aid";i:0;}}__akeeba|a:1:{s:7:"profile";i:1;}

What puzzles me is the akeeebaja at the end, I see that in all I've checked.

But I'm not sure if that means a akeeba script. Looking at my testsite, I don't see that in the sessions data field.

Looking in my raw access log I see a lot of lines like this
"GET /index.php?option=com_akeeba&view=backup&key=XXXX&noredirect=1&profile=1&task=step&step=28 HTTP/1.1" 200 17 "-" "-"

They all say step=28

Can this be the altscript, or is it the frontend script?

When using the front-end backup feature or the akeeba-altbackup.php script (which internally uses the front-end backup feature) it is normal for the visitors counter to increase; each backup step is a new visitor as far as Joomla! can tell. If you believe that the front-end backup is stuck, please ZIP and attach the backup log file of the "Front-end" origin so that I can see what's going on and help you.

I see, ok, that makes sense. The nightly backup has run since the work ysterday, so I guess the log in question is gone.
The provider has killed the task for me, and the counter has gone back to normal.
