During the finalizing of the backup it hangs at around 70% on updating statistics. Previously I had no problem last week.

I'm surprised that you didn't have this problem last week. This issue means that you have a failed update to version 3.4.3 (a version which is around over two months). In fact, it means that a table field is missing from one of Akeeba Backup's table, a field which is there since over 9 months ago. One easy way to solve it is to install Akeeba Backup Professional 3.4.3 again on top of your existing installation, without uninstalling anything. This should update the table in question.
