Sorry for the delay in the reply, I had to run some tests to make sure it's not a bug. It simply seems that your server is not allowing Akeeba Backup to communicate with Dropbox. Usually this happens because there is a firewall which forbids outbound connections. The problem is linked to Dropbox' official API using two different endpoints (URLs) for its functions:
- https://api.dropbox.com/1/ for all API calls except uploading/downloading files
- https://api-content.dropbox.com/1/ for uploading/downloading files
The latter URL seems to be a multicast domain name, i.e. it may resolve to a different IP depending on where in the world your server is and other factors. This could make it possible to perform an authentications (it uses the first URL) but not upload files (it uses the second URL).
If you want my advice, you're better off using Box.net or, even better, Amazon S3.
