Hi Nicholas,

I'm setting up a backup system involving Dropbox, as you may have noticed ;-) Now I have this issue:

When I try to restore a backup which is stored on Dropbox, I click » Manage remotely stored files «

This opens a modal box with two buttons and a notice:

"Download to your desktop
Sorry, the currently selected engine does not support downloading remotely stored files to your PC or you have already deleted the files from the remote server."

So I click the button "Fetch back to server". This renders an error message:

Could not download file. The error was: This method only supports the `php` response format

At that point I am stuck. This happens on all of my Joomla 1.5.26 / Akeeba 3.4.3 sites, not on my Joomla 2.5.6 sites (Akeeba 3.5.2).

I hope you can help me,

Kind regards, Frits

Hi Frits,

Fetching from Dropbox is not fully supported at this moment because of issues with the official Dropbox API. You can follow the manual route: upload the backup archive from your computer's Dropbox folder to your site's root folder; upload kickstart.php; run Kickstart. Given all the grave security issues with Dropbox lately and their abysmal API I'd recommend switching to Amazon S3 instead. It's much faster, very cheap (actually, cheaper than Dropbox!) and fully supported not just by Akeeba Backup but also Akeeba Kickstart Professional. The latter can be used to fetch and restore an archive directly from S3, without even requiring you to install Joomla! on the site.

Hi Nicholas,

That's a pity, I just upgraded my Dropbox for another year :-(
I was using Dropbox already for other purposes so it seemed a good move. I think I'll change only after this year has (nearly) expired, or my money will be wasted.

About the manual procedure: I've set a maximum part size of 20 mb so the backups of most of my sites consist of more than one part. Are there any particular things I should pay attention to when restoring a multi part backup manually?

Kind regards, Frits

Well, you can still use Dropbox as a storage destination, as long as you keep your part size less than 100Mb (Dropbox API limitation). Fetching back to the server directly is not perfectly possible, but you can always follow the manual route.

Regarding the other question, there is nothing in particular to pay attention to. Just make sure that all parts are present when starting the extraction. That's all there really is to it.

I set the size to 20 Mb because I thought I've read something about the risk of uploads being interrupted with larger files; would you think that 100 mb is safe from this point of view?

It depends on many factors. Try 100Mb. If that fails try lowering it to 75, 50, 30, 25 and finally 20Mb.
