Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I read the related troubleshooter articles above before posting (which pages?)? Yes
Have I searched the tickets before posting? Yes
Joomla! version: 2.5.6
PHP version: 5.2.17
MySQL version: 5.0.77
Host: Metanet (via other service)
Akeeba Backup version: 3.6.0

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Description of my issue:

Site installed this Monday, everything up to date, except AB. I kept having this error when installing extensions, especially with plugins. Sometimes the Akeeba extension installer worked (or at least I had no error, but there are also no records of restore points), sometimes it gave me a 500.
Manual backup (your backup button) always worked and still does.

Now I'm trying to install the latest version, and get the 500 when clicking the "Update to the latest version" button.

Thank you!

Please disable the "System - System Restore Points" plugin, then update to Akeeba Backup 3.6.1. Finally, please re-enable the plugin. It seems that 3.6.0's System Restore Points would not work with PHP 5.2. The incompatible feature I was using wasn't mentioned as PHP 5.3 and later in the PHP documentation and nobody (me or any of the people who tested the pre-release versions) had tested the component on PHP 5.2 :(
