Joomla! version: 2.5.6
PHP version: 5.2.17
MySQL version: (unknown)
Host: Site5
Akeeba Backup version: 3.5.1

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Description of my issue:
My hosting company recently came after me about having backups on my server. I removed the backups and unfortunately the directory admin/components/com_akeeba/backups. Despite going back in and adding the directory back, and making sure the permissions on it were set to 755, I still get the yellow error warning:

Akeeba Backup can not take a backup of your site because the output directory is not writable. Please follow the instructions below to fix this issue.

In order to fix this issue, please go to the Configuration Page and set the Output Directory to [DEFAULT_OUTPUT] (all caps, including the brackets). If this still doesn't work, please take a look at our troubleshooting instructions

Were there other directories that were in that directory that needed to be there?

Thanks,
Andy

It's not just about the directory being there and its permissions, it's also about its ownership. Here's what to do. First, delete the backups directory. Then install Akeeba Backup again on your site, without uninstalling your existing version. This will fix this issue.

That said, I find your host's policy very strange. I mean, if their policy forbids their customers from having backups they should give you a warranty that they have at least daily backups, can restore them any time of day or night without additional charge and give you a big liability insurance in case they screw up and lose your data. If they don't and they still insist that you should not store backups in your account maybe it's a good idea switching to a better host. A host asking its clients to operate their sites without keeping backups is pretty much like a parachuting instructor demanding that his students jump off the plane without having meticulously inspect and prepare their parachutes before taking off.

I am trying to automate my backup with a cron job. It seems to be trying to run from looking at the log but here is the error I get:

[120730 21:19:12] Kettenrad :: Attempting to load from database (backend)
[120730 21:19:12] -- Stored Akeeba Factory (backend) not found - hard reset

[120731 04:59:55] -- Stored Akeeba Factory (backend) not found - hard reset

Any suggestions? Thanks as always!

Hello Andy,

Please file a new ticket and ZIP and attach the backup log file of the correct origin ("Command line" if you are using the akeeba-backup.php script, "Front end" if you are using any other method including the akeeba-altbackup.php script)
