Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I read the related troubleshooter articles above before posting (which pages?)? Yes - entire quick-start-guide
Have I searched the tickets before posting? Yes
Have I read the documentation before posting (which pages?)? Yes
Joomla! version: 2.5.4
PHP version: 5.3.13
MySQL version: 5.5.24-cll
Host: hosteck
Akeeba Backup version: 3.5.2 (2012-06-18)

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Description of my issue:

Back up fails and dumps to the main Joomla menu after showing an error page for far to little time to read it. Managed to get a screen shot, which shows:

AJAX Loading Error
HTTP Status: 0 (error)
Internal status: error
XHR ReadyState: 0
Raw server responsiveness:

I have run the file permissions and tried everything found on https://www.akeebabackup.com/documentation/quick-start-guide/ajax-errors.html.

Hm, the log file doesn't indicate an error and I don't see anything which could explain this. Let's try something else. Go to your site's Global Configuration and set the Debug System to On. Then go back to Akeeba Backup and retry taking a backup. Do you see a PHP error message in the "Raw server response"? If not, please check your server's error logs for the PHP error message (or have your host do that for you).

Go to Global Configuration and set Debug Site to Off. This will be fixed in 3.6.0, scheduled for release on August 1st.

Already turned it off, thanks.

So the update will create the missing database table? Any way to do that now?

The table should not have been referenced at all since Akeeba Backup 3.5.0. There is a forgotten piece of code which does and the fix constitutes of its simple removal. FYI, this table was used in Joomla! 1.5 to provide access control to Akeeba Backup. Since 3.5.0 we do not support Joomla! 1.5 any more and that table is no longer necessary; Joomla! 2.5 has built-in access control.

Installed 3.6.0. Still get an error message for less than a second. Still the same useless error message, when I manage to grab a screen shot.

Log attached, I ran it with Debug on and got no errors, and had no entries in error.php.

Please note this problem was first reported June 23rd - https://www.akeebabackup.com/my-tickets/ticket/akeeba-backup-3x/12760-new-install-on-new-joomla-install-fails.html

Is there some way to do a clean install? I have no backups, so I have nothing to lose.

According to your log you have version 3.6.1. OK, let's try something. First go to Extensions, Extension Manager, Manage, select "Akeeba" from the list and click on Uninstall in the toolbar. Make sure the following directories are removed:
  • administrator/components/com_akeeba
  • components/com_akeeba
  • administrator/modules/mod_akadmin
  • media/com_akeeba
  • plugins/system/plg_srp
  • plugins/system/plg_akeebaupdatecheck
  • plugins/system/plg_aklazy
  • plugins/system/plg_oneclickaction

Now you can re-install Akeeba Backup. Please note that if you are using any of our other components it is advisable that you first upgrade all of them to their latest versions.

If the problem persists, please post back. I'll have to make the ticket private and ask you for some information which will allow me to troubleshoot this directly on your server.

Short story, it's working, but why is an open question.

Uninstalled and reinstalled. Got the same results with the half second error page that says nothing of use. No errors in error.php

I decided to go back and try every last suggestion I could find. Tried all of them before, but did it again with the clean install. Per the information on https://www.akeebabackup.com/documentation/troubleshooter/client-site-troubleshooting.html I tried running it from a different browser (IE). Thought I had it, but then it hung on backing up a css file (I killed it after seconds) Second try hung on a different file.

I then tried a different computer with different firewall software, and that one took.

So I went back to the first system, ran it on IE, and that one worked, as did another after it.

On Chrome browser I still get the half second error page, so it seems to be a problem with that browser.

I did try other browsers and other computers earlier, so something else was wrong that was fixed by the clean install.

This screams "cached page redirects", me thinks. Go to Chrome settings page and search for "clear browsing data". Click the highlighted button. In the "Obliterate the following items from" drop down box please select "the past 4 weeks". Select the first four checkboxes and click on "Clear browsing data". Quit the browser, restart it and log back into your site. I believe your backup may now work.

I should have thought of that -n Chrome's over zealous caching has gotten me before.

An easy way to check this, for anyone else, is to run "Incognito" by pressing cont+shift+n. The resulting window ignores all history and cache settings.

Thanks for all the help!

Paul, excellent tip on the Incognito mode! I was always following the long route I described above. It never struck me that Incognito is designed to bypass all kinds of caching. I guess the same will hold true with Firefox' Private Browsing. Very, very nice tip! Thank you!
