Most likely you are backing up an old backup. However, unless you ZIP and attach the backup log file as requested by our standard message which you have included in your post, I can't possibly know. Without the log file I have to speculate or outright guess what happens during backup and experience shows I am a very bad guesser :) So, please, go to Akeeba Backup, View Log, select Backend from the Origin drop down and then click on Download log file. It downloads a .txt file. Put it in a ZIP file (please do not use RAR, 7Z or any other format except ZIP) and attach the ZIP file here. Then I will understand what's going on and try to help you.

There seems to be a second site under the test directory, including a lot of backups. You should try excluding that from the backup set using the Files and Directories Exclusion feature of Akeeba Backup.

That file does not actually exist on the server any more and does not show Akeeba Backup: Files and Directories Exclusion list.

I have deleted or excluded any file or folder that I thought may be causing the increase in file size.

Thanks

Well, that folder did exist when you took a backup. Can you try taking a new backup and see its size now?

Despite your assurance to the contrary, the log file says that there is a directory called test which contains very large older backup files in it:
INFO |120516 11:50:18|Breaking step _before_ large file: /

/test/site-gold-insight.com-20120315-152633.zip - size: 73368646

You have to exclude or delete that directory.

Furthermore, I see that your database has two sets of tables, with different database table naming prefixes which is another reason of the bloated backup size.

I contacted the host support and there was a directory named "?" which was an output from a cron job which did not show in my ftp client. It was this directory that was causing the increased file size.

Thank you for quick response and help
