This is a very well known Joomla! bug for which I have proposed a patch... a year ago. And it's still not fixed. There is a workaround which I do mention in the installation troubleshooting page: https://www.akeebabackup.com/documentation/troubleshooter/abinstallation.html

Hi, thank you for the information. I have looked through the phpMyAdmin files and can't find any of the files you list to delete. The component isn't even showing up in the components list or the plugin list.

I have attached the error I get when I try to upload the component.

Thank you

You have tried to install Akeeba Backup 3.5.x on Joomla! 1.5, 1.6 or 1.7. This is not possible. Akeeba Backup 3.5.x only supports Joomla! 2.5 as clearly stated in our release announcement.

Joomla! 1.5 users will still be supported for using Akeeba Backup 3.4.3 on their sites until August 2012. After that point, the Joomla! project itself will completely stop supporting Joomla! 1.5. This means that Joomla! 1.5 will become vulnerable, end-of-life software which should not be used on live sites. The Joomla! project has announced its plans for Joomla! 1.5's end-of-life back in January 2011 when Joomla! 1.6 was released. If you are receiving update emails and wish them to stop, please unpublish the System - Akeeba Backup Update Check plugin.

Similarly, we have ceased support for Joomla! 1.6 since September 2011 and ceased support for Joomla! 1.7 since March 2012, that is as soon as these platforms were deemed end-of-life. Also note that Joomla! 1.5.0-1.5.25, 1.6.x and 1.7.x all have very grave security vulnerabilities. There are instructions out there which allow any monkey with a computer to hack sites based on those ancient Joomla! releases in 5 minutes or less. If you still have a live site with a vulnerable version of Joomla!, upgrade as soon as possible. If you want to continue using a vulnerable version of Joomla! at your own risk you may use one of the unsupported versions of our components mentioned in our version compatibility page: https://www.akeebabackup.com/compatibility.html

Thank you for that. I have uploaded the correct version, upgraded my site to 2.5 and uploaded Akeeba 3.5.0, however I get a red messages saying 'install path does not exist' at the same time as a blue message saying 'installing component was seccessful.' Is there something still wrong? Thank you

Sometimes you may get that error message even when everything is fine for some very complicated reasons that there's no point to analyse here. Normally, if you try installing the same version of the component again (without uninstalling <-- this is important) you should receive no error.

I shall relax then! One last thing...

Then when I go to run the configuration wizard I get the following message.

You have selected a minimum stability for updates notification which may cause unstable releases of Akeeba Backup to be installed on your site. Are you absolutely certain you understand the risks and want to keep this setting?

I haven't selected any update notifications. Should I change this, if so where? Or is this something to do with the 3rd party plugin that I've got running?

Thank you.

On that page, the very last option allows you to select the minimum stability for updates. By default it reads "Alpha" which means that you'll be notified to upgrade to all unstable releases. If you don't want to do that you can either change that option on that page or, after you have dismissed that page, go to Akeeba Backup's control panel, click on Component Parameters, click on Live Update, find the "Minimum release stability for update notifications" and set it to Stable, then click on Save & Close.
