Joomla! version: 2.5.4
PHP version: 5.x
MySQL version: (unknown)
Host: GoDaddy
Akeeba Backup version: 3.4.x

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Description of my issue:
This morning I created a backup of my site (mbyc.com) then tried to install a newer version of Akeeba backup (3.5.2a) It not only did not install but after the attempt, I lost the complete back end of the site. I reinstalled the site from the back up and everything SEEMS to be alright but I wanted to make another backup backup file because the installer deleted the one I created this morning. When I try to make the backup, I immediately get an error "Backup Failed

The backup operation has been halted because an error was detected.
The last error message was:

AJAX Loading Error
HTTP Status: 500 (Internal Server Error)
Internal status: error
XHR ReadyState: 4
Raw server response:

Do you know what happened?

Remove the following directories:
- administrator/components/com_akeeba and its contents, except the administrator/components/com_akeeba/backup folder.
- components/com_akeeba and its contents
- administrator/modules/mod_akadmin and its contents
- plugins/system/srp and its contents
- plugins/system/akeebaupdatecheck and its contents
Then please re-install Akeeba Backup Professional 3.4.3.

If you're wondering, after restoring the backup there are some files left behind from the failed 3.5.a2 (alpha - testing release) installation which caused the problem you were experiencing.

Would it be easier or would it even work to uninstall Akeeba backup then reinstall it?

It is easier and would work, but you should be aware of the following two consequences:
  • All your settings will be lost and you will have to create afresh and reconfigure all your backup profiles
  • All backups stored in the default backup location (administrator/components/com_akeeba/backup) will be removed without a confirmation

If that's fine with you, you can go the uninstallation route.

Okay, you win. :-)
I'll try it now.

This seems to be a nightmare that won't go away.
I followed the instructions given and downloaded the latest stable version of Akeeba Backup (3.4.3) but on installation I get the following errors:
JInstaller: :Install: Cannot find XML setup file
JFolder: :files: Path is not a folder. Path: /home/content/m/b/y/mbycftp/html/components/com_akeeba
JInstaller: :Install: Cannot find XML setup file

I've only seen that twice, when the directory I thought I had deleted actually ended up as a crashed file. Can you try visiting your site with FTP and check that the components/com_akeeba directory or file or whatever doesn't exist anymore?

Components/com_akeeba does exist but it has today's date on the folder. Did the attempted reinstall create the directory?

Not sure. Delete it and try installing again.

Actually all the folders I deleted are back but with todays date.

Besides trying to delete them (except the administrator/components/com_akeeba/backup), all I can do is ask you to take a look at these troubleshooting instructions. Especially the tmp directory and FTP instructions in them.

Nicholas, I have no idea what happened but after looking at all of the folders and files that were reinstalled, I decided to try to perform a back up. EVERYTHING WORKED PERFECTLY! All my profiles are still there as well as my back history and old backups. It would appear that Akeeba backup installed properly but then gave me those errors later. Anyway, it works now and I promise to NEVER attempt to install anything but a new stable release again.
Thanks for your help.

Joomla! extensions installer: where error messages have no relevance to what is really going on :D I am glad we got that solved.
