Hi,

My apologies if this has already been covered but I did a search and nothing showed

Wondering if Google Drive will be supported as a backup option?
Was talking to a lady about her website I'm building for her and she asked about Google Drive as option instead of dropbox

Just thought I'd check before I get back to her next week

Thanks
Paul

I am currently working on an integration for version 3.5.0. However, please note that Google Drive's terms of service give Google complete ownership over your files. If you read them, they clearly state that Google may make your files publicly available. Even though that is most likely of not a big concern, it doesn't forbid Google from taking any part of your site's backup and sending it to anyone else. Are you sure you want to use Google Drive? I mean, yeah, 25Gb are cool, but are they worth selling your soul to Google?

Thanks for the reply,
I saw a comparison between the differing options and noted the Google backup terms

It wouldn't be my choice to use Google Drive :)
Client had done her research and thinks the terms are badly written so will change as they are such bad PR

Be interesting to see which way she jumps when the site is ready to go live :)

Cheers

IMHO the best storage method for backups is one which explicitly states that you own the data and makes sure nobody else sees your data. That's why I'm using Amazon S3. With a total of 10Gb of traffic per month and a permanent storage of another 20Gb per month, I get charged the astronomical amount of... are you ready for this? Less than 4$ USD. Four bucks! A decent coffee costs more than that. So, would I sell my soul to Google instead of spending 4$ per month for backing up five sites? Hell no.

When you put things into perspective for your client, I guess she will prefer to spend 10-15$ per year to store her site's backups than selling her soul to Big G. Backups are your entire site. It's not something to mess with, not with a light heart anyway.

Hi Nicholas,

After talking through the gist of this email with the client (refering to you as a fellow developer :)
We will be using Amazon S3 when the site goes live sometime in the next two weeks.

Thanks for your input

Cheers
