Joomla! version: (2.5.4)
PHP version: (unknown)
MySQL version: (unknown)
Host: (HostGator)
Akeeba Backup version: (unknown)

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Description of my issue:
In development with this site. Was running 2.5.3 and setting up site. Had not tried to use Akeeba yet. Saw indication that Joomla update available, so I clicked on the link from the back end. Don't know if that had anything to do with it or not, but next time I logged in, problem occurred. Read the article https://www.akeebabackup.com/support/akeeba-backup-3x/new.html which described our situation exactly, but neither fix worked.

Since I didn't realize what was happening, I clicked the backup button but aborted. Attached is the log file.

do you have any suggestions? We're dead in the water.

This is not an issue related to my software. It is a known issue with Joomla! 2.5.4: joomlacode.org/gf/project/joomla/tracker/?action=TrackerItemEdit&tracker_item_id=28354

In short, if you have given Super Admin and/or back-end login access rights (ACLs) to the Public group you can no longer log in to your site. This is NOT -I repeat, NOT- related in any way to Akeeba Backup. What usually happens is that the last thing people did before updating was take a new backup, or when they try to log in the only thing they see is an Akeeba Backup icon. The reason why you see an Akeeba Backup icon is that I do not do any ACL checks on that module. It displays to all users with back-end access. This is an intentional bug, as I was trying to support both Joomla! 1.5 and 2.5 with the same code.

I suggest removing your site's files, restoring the last backup of your site with Joomla! 2.5.3, change the ACLs of the Public group so that it does not have Super Admin and back-end login access, then upgrade Joomla!.

Since we are at it, never, EVER, EVER touch the ACLs unless you absolutely, undoubtedly, beyond any shred of doubt or hesitation understand fully and extremely clearly the precise implications of what you are doing. Would you ever try to tweak your car's airbags, seatbelts and brakes? Both are safety features, of cars and sites. Don't touch them, or things will break in a really bad way.
