Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I read the related troubleshooter articles above before posting (which pages?)? Yes
Have I searched the tickets before posting? Yes
Have I read the documentation before posting (which pages?)? Yes
Joomla! version: 1.5.22
PHP version: 5.x
MySQL version: (unknown)
Host: Greennet.apc.org.uk
Akeeba Backup version: latest

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Description of my issue:
I ran a backup and I get a whole bunch of files, they are taking up nearly a Gig of space and it seems like a mistake.

I tried to send the log file but it is too big, (4.4MB) what next?

Can you help?
Thanks
Sarah

Hello Sarah,

I'd like some clarifications so that I can better help you:
- Exact version of PHP. 5.x could mean 5.0, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3 or 5.4. Each one of them is a completely different story. For example, if you have 5.0.0 through 5.2.6 then Akeeba Backup can't even run reliably. If you have PHP 5.4.x, we only offer experimental support.
- The exact version of Akeeba Backup. "Latest" doesn't mean anything to me, especially since the average lifetime of the "latest" version is about 10 days over here :) Something like 3.4.3 or 3.3.13 would actually mean a lot.
- When you say you get a whole bunch of files, what do their names look like? If they have a common name and the extensions are .j01, .j02, .j03 and so on then that's normal. If they are all .jpa files with different names and a size of 19 bytes that's a major problem.
- I really, really need your log file. Go to Akeeba Backup, View Log and select the "Backend" origin. Click on Download log file. It downloads a .txt file. Upload it to a free file storage service like Dropbox or Windows Live SkyDrive and paste a link to the file. Alternatively, you can upload it to your site's root and paste a link here.

Thank you for helping me help you!

OK:

PHP Version 5.2.6-1+lenny16

Akeeba Backup Core 3.4.3 (2012-03-21)

File names are like this (in ftp folder): site-www.bgen.org.uk-20120425-133450.j82 (last number in file extension varies) and they are quite large. They are taking up a lot of space - there are 84 files taking up 11mb each.

This is what I see in the Joomla backend administrator:
Part 00 • Part 01 • Part 02 • Part 03 • Part 04 • Part 05 • Part 06 • Part 07 • Part 08 • Part 09 • Part 10 • Part 11 • Part 12 • Part 13 • Part 14 • Part 15 • Part 16 • Part 17 • Part 18 • Part 19 • Part 20 • Part 21 • Part 22 • Part 23 • Part 24 • Part 25 • Part 26 • Part 27 • Part 28 • Part 29 • Part 30 • Part 31 • Part 32 • Part 33 • Part 34 • Part 35 • Part 36 • Part 37 • Part 38 • Part 39 • Part 40 • Part 41 • Part 42 • Part 43 • Part 44 • Part 45 • Part 46 • Part 47 • Part 48 • Part 49 • Part 50 • Part 51 • Part 52 • Part 53 • Part 54 • Part 55 • Part 56 • Part 57 • Part 58 • Part 59 • Part 60 • Part 61 • Part 62 • Part 63 • Part 64 • Part 65 • Part 66 • Part 67 • Part 68 • Part 69 • Part 70 • Part 71 • Part 72 • Part 73 • Part 74 • Part 75 • Part 76 • Part 77 • Part 78 • Part 79 • Part 80 • Part 81 • Part 82

OK, this is all normal. Your backup is split into many files (actually, 10 Mb files) because Akeeba Backup's Configuration Wizard determined that your server doesn't really like it if a PHP script tries to create larger files. Therefore the split archive is perfectly normal.

Now, about the size. You are backing up another site under the develop directory, but it's easy to fix. Go to Akeeba Backup's control panel page and click on the Files and Directories Exclusion. On the top of the page, click on Summary View. Click the "Exclude directory" button next to the Add new filter label on top. A new text field appears. Type
develop
in there and click the pencil icon to its left. Go back and take a new backup. Much better, isn't it?
