Description of my issue:

AJAX Loading Error
HTTP Status: 500 (Internal Server Error)
Internal status: error
XHR ReadyState: 4
Raw server response:

Backing up the database works. Backing up the entire site fails. I believe we have sufficient space because I just deleted 10 previous backups. I've gone through the troubleshooter, re-run the wizard, confirmed execution time of 30 seconds and memory limit of 128mb.

I found that I could exclude a cache-old directory and the backup worked. All works fine now.

I would think that the cache-old directory is a copy you made of your cache directory. In that case, it would be better deleting it. The contents of the tmp, cache and administrator/cache directories are temporary and should always be safe to delete them.
