I just realised you accidentally closed your other ticket, so I am pasting the reply here as well:

Please go to your backup output directory (default: administrator/components/com_akeeba/backup) and remove all akeeba.*.php files, then retry backing up. You have a stuck memory file.

Thanks Nicholas. I deleted all of the *.php files in the ~~~ /backup directory and tried it, but no change. It is still generating the backups, only the status bar hangs at 78% complete.

Hi Nicholas, I have attached the log file.

Akeeba Backup 3.3.6 is no longer supported (not to mention that it's not even supposed to actually run in Joomla! 2.5, as it predates Joomla! 2.5 by almost a year). Please upgrade the Akeeba Backup 3.4.3. Also note that the problem you have occurs because the database tables are not properly installed. If after installing Akeeba Backup Professional 3.4.3 you experience the same issue, please uninstall Akeeba Backup Professional 3.4.3 and reinstall it to fix this problem.

Side note: See, that's why I ask for the mandatory information when submitting a ticket. Should you have told me that you're using Akeeba Backup 3.3.6, I could have told you it's not compatible with Joomla! 2.5 five days ago, saving you a lot of time and most likely allowing you to reach a solution much faster.

Sorry Nicholas, I entered the wrong joomla version by mistake. This site is 1.5.25.
However, your advice worked. I uninstalled the old Akeeba version and then installed the latest version, 3.4.3, and now it works.
Thanks for the help!
BTW,
I also manage several Drupal sites. I wish there were a Akeeba and Admin tools for Drupal, would you consider?

I'm glad that's solved :)

There are no plans to create versions of Akeeba Backup and Admin Tools for Drupal. The main reason is that commercial extensions are treated with what ranges from mild hostility to bigotry in the Drupal world. Obviously, I can not spend several months of my life doing R&D, trying to write decent software for a market which doesn't accept that developers should be paid for mass distributed modules.
