thanks, I've done that already. i get the same response by both automatic update (with Download ID,) or by the update via the Joomla installer.

Ask your host to increase their unrealistically small MySQL connection timeout. Or just take your site to a faster host. Strongly recommended. HostGator is the second worst host I've seen, with the worst of the worst being GoDaddy.

cool, i'll see if they'll up the connection time. Is there a specific threshold i should aim for?

also, if they can / won't do that can i just uninstall the current version and install the new version? Any special precaution to take when doing that other than the obvious of taking a backup first.

I've got too many sites to move everything right now so I need to make it work, if possible.

Thanks again for your help.

also, just noticed it's choking during system restore of any kind. Is there a way to turn system restore off?

Yes, of course, just disable the "System - System Restore Points" plug-in in the Manage Plugins page of Joomla!.

Issue Solved!

I disabled System Restore and the update via Download ID ran perfectly. The update runs the System Restore fine but it seems something was going on with the SR in the previous version.

Thanks again for the support.

Looking back at the changelogs, System Restore Points were broken in Akeeba Backup 3.3.9. I had put that in the release announcement back then. That's why that didn't work.
