Joomla! version: (unknown)
PHP version: (unknown)
MySQL version: (unknown)
Host: (optional, but it helps us help you)
Akeeba Backup version: (unknown)

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Description of my issue:
I had a problem with the recent upgrade, an then found the fixes. My host support has been involved, but for some reason even though I installed the latest update, the Akeeba Component does not show in the list of Joomla Componenets.
I can still take backup using Akeeba,by entering via the Joomla login page, but the Backup File sizes have increased from around 387Mb to 1.52 Gb

I make a wild guess, you have Joomla! 1.7 or 2.5. In this case, if you install Akeeba Backup on top of your existing installation (do no uninstall!) should make the component appear in the menu again. The "disappearing menu item" is a known bug with Joomla! 1.6 or later. I had proposed a patch about a year ago, but it was never accepted on the grounds that the Joomla! Platform maintainers were onto it. Well, a year later, no word of a proper solution :(

Regarding the backup size, please ZIP and attach your backup log file. I'm very bad at guessing and I don't want to mislead you :)

Hm, that has never happened in Joomla! 1.5 before. I have no idea how that could ever happen. You'd have to deliberately modify your site's #__components and #__menu tables to achieve that :s Except for uninstalling and reinstalling, I don't know of any other method which could help. In this case, please remember to keep a copy of your backups, as uninstalling Akeeba Backup will delete them from your server.

I just found that the Akeeba Component has somehow been disabled in the Extensions Manager.
I think it may have happened during the recent updates as I did not do it?

No, that's something you have to do manually.
