Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I read the related troubleshooter articles above before posting (which pages?)? Yes
Have I searched the tickets before posting? Yes
Have I read the documentation before posting (which pages?)? Yes
Joomla! version: 1.7 & 2.5
PHP version: 5
MySQL version: 5
Host: (optional, but it helps us help you)
Akeeba Backup version: 3.3.11

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please attach a ZIP file containing your Akeeba Backup log file in order for us to help you with any backup or restoration issue. If the file is over 2Mb, please upload it on your server and post a link to it.

Can't do that since alle files equal 0 byte!

Description of my issue:

Upgrading to the latest version fails sometimes, setting all files to 0 bytes via ftp user.

I don't understand what "update" refers to. Are you trying to update Akeeba Backup from 3.3.11 to 3.3.13? If so, are you using the Live Update ("Update found") button in Akeeba Backup's control panel, or Joomla!'s extension installer? If I understand correctly, you have Joomla!'s FTP layer turned on in your Global Configuration. Can you confirm that you can install or upgrade any other extension on your site? If you can not do that, then the problem is at your server side and I can't help you.

Moreover, I need the exact PHP version number. PHP 5 can mean 5.0.x (not supported), 5.1.x (not supported), 5.2.0-5.2.6 (not supported), 5.2.6-5.2.17 (supported), 5.3.0-5.3.3 (partially supported), 5.3.4-5.3.10 (supported) or 5.4.x (not supported). I also need to know if you see any error messages on your screen.

PHP Versions 5.2.12 / 5.2.12 / 4.4.9 / 5.3.10
MySQL Version 5.1

Update has been performed using the Joomla Updater (next to the Joomla extension installer). I can recreate the failure. If wanted I can provide a test website where you can check and perform the update yourself.

Other extensions install and update without problem, including updates from Joomla 1.7 to 2.5.

FTP is turned on.

The last thing I see is: Fatal error: Call to a member function load() on a non-object in /www/htdocs/w00efbe3/libraries/joomla/installer/adapters/file.php on line 204

Since all files are 0 byte in size there are no logs or backups left.

Joomla! updater is not supported for upgrading from Akeeba Backup Professional versions 3.0.a2 up to and including 3.3.12. The Joomla! updater will only be supported for upgrading from Akeeba Backup Professional 3.3.13 to 3.4.b1, when that version is released. Since you have Akeeba Backup Professional 3.3.11, please use either of the two supported methods outlined in our documentation. Moreover, if it is the first time you update Akeeba Backup Professional or you have changed your AkeebaBackup.com password or email, you will have to follow our instructions for entering/updating your Download ID.

Thanks Nicholas. I did an Update by installing the 3.3.13 the manual way and everything went fine.

Great and swift support on a Saturday, despite my ignorance ;) though I did read the documentation.
