Hello:
After a fresh manual install, the plugin throws a 500 Application Error:

Can not save /opt/bitnami/apps/wordpress/htdocs/wp-content/plugins/akeebabackupwp/helpers/private/config.php

Looking at the directory, the file does not exist.
Should I run an install script?

Hello,

this means there's a permission error: your webserver can't save the file on the filesystem.
Please get in touch with your sysadmin or hosting and ask him to take a look at your server permissions.

I am in the server directory - I can reset permissions, np, but I do not see the file in that path - see attached screenshot.

You can't see it because Akeeba Backup can't save it, hence the error.

Files and folders are all set to 755 - should I set file permissions differently? I'm used to the Joomla environment with files = 644.

Please check the ownership, too.
Try to temporary set the permissions to that folder to 777, does it work?
If so it means that you have an ownership issue.
