It is probably very easy for you but I am having BIG problems transferring a Joomla and Wordpress site to a new server!!!

1) Do I have to change the Name Servers BEFORE trying the transfer?

2) I uploaded kickstart.php and the backup file to the new server to the primary domain (I have several domains on the same account)

3) I exported the DB from previous host

4) I created a new DB and user on the new server

5) I successfully imported the DB to the new server

6) Then I start the Transfer Wizard

7) Then I enter the URL to the new site, it looks okay because I can choose how I would like to do the transfer, I pick the Manually method because I already uploaded the files.

8) THEN I am getting problems!!!!! I can't seem to get to the correct path to the URL because I am always getting 404 not found! In this case the new server is using a temporary URL and thats what I enter but I still get the 404 not found!

I understand that you can't tell me the path to where kickstart.php is located! But I hope you can answer the other questions — if I am doing this in the correct order!?

Thanks!!!

You're making it harder than it really is.

Your full site backup includes both the files and the database of your site. You don't need to move the database manually. You DO need to create a new database on your target server, the restore script does not have the rights to do that in most cases.

You have uploaded kickstart.php and your backup archive to your target site, that's good. Now just call Kickstart, www.mysite.com/kickstart.php. Kickstart will extract your backup archive and pass control over to the restore script, which is embedded in the archive. The restore script will prompt you for the new database connection information and restore the database, prompt you for some other information about your site and write out the new wp-conf.php file (I think that's what it's called in WordPress). The last step is to convert the hard coded URLs in the database to the new address. This step probably would require that you have switched the name servers.

The Transfer Wizard tries to move your backup archive from the source site to the target site and skip the upload and kickstart steps. It can be tricky because PHP and FTP don't get along all that well. I personally prefer to do it "the hard way."
